"Meditation" is herein loosely and eclectically considered to be various methods or techniques for transforming and altering consciousness, increasing insight, producing joyfulness, peace, and euphoria, exercising the Active Imagination, encouraging mystical experiences, exploring body-mind-spirit relationships, skipping along the edges of rEaLiTy, experienciong life in a more beautiful and creative mode of being, playing mental games, making art and music and dance, and delving into spiritual matters. "Meditation" can be done while standing, gardening, walking, dancing, doing taijiquan, drumming, or sitting on your butt, etc.. You can practice any religion or none and still benefit from meditating; although most religions have some meditative practices they would prefer you do and some that you not do.
This collection of citations reflects some of my own reading, citations for items in my home library (VSCL), resources in Northern California, references to other webpages I have created on my own specific "meditation" practices (e.g., gardening, taijiquan, qigong, walking, yoga, tarot, reading, contemplation, and mindfulness, etc.), and, sometimes, whatever strikes my fancy. The list may be of little use to anyone else, or might be helpful to a few.
My Pathways in the Green Valley and Cloud Hands blogs are a way to follow my current activities and interests.

Ethics
Attention to ethical, moral, and principled social and personal behavior is
considered
by most to be an essential precursor to an effective meditation practice.
Doing good,
avoiding evil, and knowing right from wrong are essential to progress in
meditation. Contemplation and reflection on moral principles or great women and men who exemplify right living, high character, and goodness are all part of the
meditation
practices of many spiritual traditions.

Introduction to Insight Meditation Amaravati Buddhist Centre,
UK. "The term "Insight Meditation" (samatha-vipassana)
refers to practices for the mind that develop calm (samatha) through
sustained attention, and insight (vipassana) through reflection. A
fundamental technique for sustaining attention is focusing awareness on the
body; traditionally, this is practiced while sitting or walking. The guide
begins with some advice on this. Reflection occurs quite naturally
afterwards, when one is "comfortable" within the context of the meditation
exercise. There will be a sense of ease and interest, and one begins to look
around and become acquainted with the mind that is meditating. This "looking
around" is called contemplation, a personal and direct seeing that can only be
suggested by any technique." Insight Meditation is also called
Mindfulness, Vipassana. Insight meditation methods.
Insight Meditation: "Vipassanā (Pāli) or vipaśyanā (विपश्यना, Sanskrit) in the Buddhist tradition means insight into the nature of reality. A regular practitioner of Vipassana is known as a Vipassi (vipasya). In the Theravadin context, this entails insight into the three marks of existence. In Mahayana contexts, it entails insight into what is variously described as sunyata, dharmata, the inseparability of appearance and emptiness, clarity and emptiness, or bliss and emptiness.[1] Vipassana is one of Asia's most ancient techniques of meditation, attributed to Gautama Buddha. It is a way of self-transformation through self-observation and introspection. In English, vipassanā meditation is often referred to simply as "insight meditation". In a broader sense, vipassanā has been used as one of two poles for the categorization of types of Buddhist meditation, the other being samatha (Pāli; Sanskrit: śamatha). Samatha is a focusing, pacifying and calming meditation, common to many traditions in the world, notably yoga. It is used as a preparation for vipassanā, pacifying the mind and strengthening the concentration in order to allow the work of insight. This dichotomy is also sometimes discussed as "stopping and seeing." In Buddhist practice it is said that, while samatha can calm the mind, only insight can reveal how the mind was disturbed to start with, which leads to prajñā (Pāli: paññā, wisdom) and jñāna (Pāli: ñāṇa, knowledge) and thus understanding, preventing it from being disturbed again. The term is also used to refer to the Buddhist vipassana movement (modeled after Theravāda Buddhism meditation practices), which employs vipassanā and ānāpāna meditation as its primary techniques and places emphasis on the teachings of the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. The primary initial subject of investigation in that style of meditation is sensation and feeling (Skt: Vedanā)." Vipassana - Wikipedia Insight meditation methods.
