I use this webpage to 1) organize bibliographic
information about books in my personal library (VSCL = Valley Spirit Center
Library) in Vancouver, Washington. 2) Organize URL links to Internet WWW
resources that I find useful; 3) keep notes on resources useful in Taoist
research; 4) share information with others interested in the same subjects.
There are many other excellent and extensive formal and detailed bibliographies
about Taoism on the Internet; and Internet search engines like Google or Bing
provide ample indexing of Internet WWW webpages about Taoism. This
document just helps me organize my own research into Daoism (Taoism). To
search by author, use your browser's Search function opening Keys: Ctrl + F.

Daoist Blogs, Taoist Blogs
The number of blogs or weblogs about Daoism has increased
greatly over the last four years. However, many bloggers cannot often
sustain the interest or energy needed to continue posting for long periods of
time, and many of these new blogs wither and die after less than 50 posts.
Nevertheless, some of Daoist "orientated" blogs have been online for years and
have very informative, insightful, and well written posts. Blog readers
use an RSS feed reader to collect posts from blogs; and, I use Feed Demon to
gather posts from blogs I am interested in reading.

Kohn , Livia 1956-
Livia Kohn, Ph.D., is a world-renowned scholar of Daoism
and professor of Religion and East Asian Studies at
Boston University.
She received her Ph.D. in Chinese Studies from Bonn University in 1980.
She is well known for her excellent edited publications, original writing,
scholarship and translations regarding the religion, philosophy, history,
thought, and practices of Daoism.
Professor Kohn conducts
workshops and
give lectures at Boston University and at
conferences.
"Livia Kohn is Professor Emerita of Religion and East Asian Studies at
Boston University. A graduate of Bonn University, Germany, she has spent many
years pursuing research on medieval Daoism and Chinese long life practices. She
has written and edited numerous books, taught many classes on Asian religions,
and worked on a large variety of related projects. Livia Kohn has
practiced taiji quan, qigong, meditation, and other Asian self-cultivation
practices for over twenty years. She is also a certified instructor of Kripalu
Yoga and a licensed hypnotist. She teaches regular workshops on Daoism in New
Mexico and Chicago and runs international conferences on Daoist studies. She has
lived in Japan for a total of ten years and traveled widely in Asia, especially
China, Korea, and Thailand." "Livia Kohn graduated from Bonn University,
Germany, in 1980. She then spent six years doing research at the Institute for
Research in Humanities of Kyoto University in Japan, after which she joined
Boston University as Professor of Religion and East Asian Studies. She has also
worked variously as visiting professor and adjunct faculty at Lorand University
in Budapest, the Stanford Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto, Union Institute
in Cincinnati, Ohio, and San Francisco State University. She has served on
numerous committees and editorial boards, and organized a series of major
international conferences on Daoism."
Professor Kohn has greatly influenced my thinking about
Daosim, Internal Alchemy, Daoyin, the History of Daoism, Neidan, and Chinese
philosophy. I find her writing style to be very clear, highly informative,
and engaging.

The Routledge Encyclopedia of Taoism.
Edited by Fabrizio Pregadio. London, Taylor and Francis Group, Routledge,
2008, 2011. Reprint Edition, paperback, 2011. 2 Volumes, 1551 pages.
ISBN: 978-0415678599. VSCL. "The Routledge Encyclopedia of
Taoism provides comprehensive coverage of Taoist religion, thought and
history, reflecting the current state of Taoist scholarship. It contains
hundreds of entries authored by an international body of experts which cover
areas such as schools and traditions, texts, persons and sacred sites. Terms are
given in their original characters, transliterated and translated. The
encyclopedia is thoroughly cross-referenced and indexed, and also includes a
chronology and bibliography. It is invaluable for students and scholars in the
fields of religious studies, philosophy and religion, and Asian history and
culture." 'Pregadio assembled an
outstanding international team of leading scholars to compose this two-volume
set. With a focus on the history and traditions of Taoism, this work effectively
challenges romanticized views that reduce the richness of these traditions to
the Daode jing (Tao Te Ching) and the Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu). The encyclopedia
includes a 196-page overview that could serve as a superb intermediate textbook
on Taoism. The rest of the entries are arranged alphabetically, using the pinyin
transliteration system. They cover topics of interest to advanced students and
experts, including more detailed entries on texts, doctrines, sacred beings and
places, the history of Taoism, and religious practices and experiences. The
volume includes an excellent topical table of contents and an extensive index.
For advanced researchers, the appendixes are gold, offering an extensive
bibliography of reference sources, a list of sources in the Taoist canon
referenced to the three catalogs of the Daozang, and a 102-page bibliography of
scholarly resources including English and French language sources and seminal
scholarly works in Chinese and Japanese. Summing Up: Essential. Libraries
supporting religious studies or Chinese studies programs; upper-level
undergraduates and above.' -- G. J. Reece (American University),
Choice. ‘The depth of the entries
and variety of subjects covered are impressive, creating a must-have reference
for anyone interested in Taoism.’-- Christine Pesch (Yale
University), Theological Librarianship. Fabrizio Pregadio has taught
at the University of Venice (1996-97), the Technical University of Berlin
(1998-2001), Stanford University (2001-08), and McGill University in Montreal
(2009-10). He is the author of "Great Clarity: Daoism and Alchemy in Early
Medieval China" (Stanford University Press, 2006) and the editor of "The
Encyclopedia of Taoism" (Routledge, 2008). His translations of Taoist texts
include the "Cantong qi" (Seal of the Unity of the Three), the "Wuzhen pian"
(Awakening to Reality), and the "Ruyao jing" (Mirror for Compounding the
Medicine), all published by Golden Elixir Press. VSCL.

Whole Heart of Tao: The Complete Teachings from the Oral Tradition of Lao-Tzu.
By John Bright-Fey. Birmingham, Alabama, Crane Hill Publishers, 2006.
376 pages. ISBN: 1575872471. The Reverend Venerable John Bright-Fey,
Sifu Fey, is the 12th generation lineage holder of the Blue Dragon Order of
Esoteric Zen Buddhism, a distinct line of knowledge descended directly from
Shaolin Temple. Sifu Bright-Fey teaches at the
New Forest Center for Contemplative Living, Birmingham, Alabama. This
version of the Tao Te Ching is both a translation by a Chinese scholar and a
fascinating interpolation based on his religious training. He uses a
schema of interpretation for lines in each of the 81 Chapters of the Tao Te
Ching based on the concepts of the Taoist Mind (mindset and world view), Taoist
Body (day to day concerns of living), Taoist Hand (training techniques by a
Cultivator of the Tao, spiritual disciplines) and Taoist Heart (core and
cherished beliefs) [p.21-]. His rigorous experiential approach resonates
with my training in Taijiquan, Qigong, gardening, spiritual practices, and
ritual. VSCL.

The Way and Its Power: Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and Its Place in Chinese

Part of the UNESCO collection of representative works, 1994. New York, Grove Press,
1958. Introduction, commentary, index, notes, 262 pages. ISBN: 978-08021-5085-1. "Arthur Waley’s brilliant and definitive translation of one of the foremost of all
mystical books, Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, has become a modern classic in its own
right. Unlike previous translations, it is founded not on the medieval
commentaries but on a close study of all the early Chinese literature, and it
provides a singular example of authoritative scholarship skillfully blended with
brilliant, precise writing. In his introduction, Dr. Waley gives an extensive
scholarly account of Chinese thought down to the end of the third century B.C.
Here, the author presents a full picture of Chinese prehistory, early
philosophy, and literature, showing the original, lofty conception of Taoism
before the gradual corruption through the course of centuries, tracing this
conflict of philosophies and its background of politics."

"Among the many transmitted editions of the Tao Te Ching text, the three
primary ones are named after early commentaries. The "Yan Zun Version," which is
only extant for the Te Ching, derives from a commentary attributed to
Han
Dynasty scholar Yan Zun (巖尊, fl. 80 BC-10 AD). The "Heshang Gong Version" is
named after the legendary Heshang Gong (河上公
"Riverside Sage") who supposedly lived during the reign (202-157 BC) of
Emperor Wen of Han. This commentary (tr. Erkes 1950) has a preface written
by Ge Xuan (葛玄,
164-244 AD), granduncle of
Ge Hong, and
scholarship dates this version to around the 3rd century AD. The "Wang Bi
Version" has more verifiable origins than either of the above.
Wang Bi (王弼,
226 – 249 AD) was a famous
Three Kingdoms period philosopher and commentator on the Tao Te Ching
(tr. Lin 1977, Rump and Chan 1979) and the
I Ching."
- Wikipedia, Tao Te
Ching
"Wang Bi (Wang
Pi), styled Fusi, is regarded as one of the most important
interpreters of the classical Chinese texts known as the
Daodejing (Tao Te
Ching) and the Yijing (I Ching).
He lived and worked during the period after the collapse of the Han
dynasty in 220 CE, an era in which elite interest began to shift
away from Confucianism
toward Daoism. As a
self-identified Confucian, Wang Bi wanted to create an understanding
of Daoism that was consistent with Confucianism but which did not
fall into what he considered to be the errors of then-popular Daoist
sectarian groups. He understood his main task to be the restoration
of order and a sense of direction to Chinese society after the
turbulent final years of the Han, and offered the ideal of
establishing the “true way” (zhendao) as the
solution. Although he died at the age of twenty-four, his
interpretations of Daoism became influential for several reasons.
The edition of the Daodejing that he used in his commentary
on that work has been the basis for almost every translation into a
Western language for nearly two centuries. Moreover, his
interpretations of Daoist material did not undermine Confucianism,
making them palatable to later Confucian thinkers. Finally,
Wang Bi’s work provided a way of talking about indigenous Chinese
beliefs that made them seem compatible with the introduction of
Indian Buddhist texts
and ideas in the decades to follow."
