Proposed Constitutional Amendment: War Powers by Public Vote

I was surprised when I did a Google search on the “28th Amendment” to see that my own proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ranked number three.

War Powers Authorization by Public Vote
A Proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America
2nd Draft, March 17, 2008, by Mike Garofalo

I recently reflected, somewhat tongue in cheek, on other proposed 28th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

If I prayed, which I don’t, I would plead to dear old St. Patrick, “Dear St. Patrick, please help us all find a way to peace and please drive away all the deceitful and profiteering warmongers; and, please don’t drive out any of those lovely slithering snakes for the sake of diversity. In Athena’s name we pray, amen.”

Senior Health: A Positive Mindset

“What are the qualities that make one’s mindset positive?
They include being able to:

Think in a calm, pacified, and reflective manner instead of being disturbed, agitated, and impulsive in one’s reactions.

Put ideas together rationally and arrive at the right judgment even in the absence of obvious evidence or proof.

Decide, plan, and execute a course of action in a patient, persistent, and disciplined manner.

Recognize the changes and be flexible in adapting to them.

Observe and perceive things with a sense of humor instead of outrage, indignation, and anger.

Let go of useless and counterproductive thoughts, desires, and ambitions instead of being preoccupied with them.

Relax and meditate or rest.

Resist temptation and coercion.”

The Back Porch in March

A few years back, Karen and I added a screened back porch to our home. We have many potted plants on the porch, and a few comfortable chairs.

In the springtime, we have some spectacular views of the ornamental trees and fruit trees in bloom. This week, the ornamental plum (with pink blossoms) and the ornamental pear (with white blossoms) put on quite a show for us. The pecan trees (foregroud with white painted trunks) have yet to leaf out this year.

The last few days have been overcast and cool - the perfect time for a cup of coffee and sitting in the back porch.

Garofalo Family Celebration

Karen and I drove to Los Angeles last Friday. We enjoyed visiting with Paul and Janet Garofalo, and Phil and Margaret Garofalo. We also visited with Olivia, Christopher, Christina, Raquel, Yo, and Norma.

Paul was celebrating his 60th birthday. We also celebrated Karen’s 60h birthday.

Party Time

In the above photo, from left to right, front row: Janet, Margaret, and Karen; back row: Paul, Phil and Mike. Our parents, June and Mike, used to go to Philippe’s for sandwiches when they were dating. Philippe’s has been open since 1903. It is right across from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

The weather was perfect for this vacation.

The Ancients Held a Rite

“Still lie the sheltering snows, undimmed and white;
And reigns the winter’s pregnant silence still;
No sign of spring, save that the catkins fill,
And willow stems grow daily red and bright.
These are days when ancients held a rite
Of expiation for the old year’s ill,
And prayer to purify the new year’s will.”

Happy Chinese New Year!!

Professor Bohn told me that “It`s New Year in China: the year of the rat, the element wood, the celestial stem Wu, and earth branch Zi!”

Just Looking

Katelyn and Mike

We, Katelyn and Grandpa Mike (Pacos), enjoyed walking in the fields together. Our dog, Rowdy, also joined us to ramble and play.

She is 1, and I’m 61 … we both like to play.

Winter Wonderland

Winter storms have arrived on the West Coast. It has rained nearly 5 inches in the last 10 days. Snow levels are down to 2,500 feet in the local mountains. Streams and creeks are all running again in the Valley.

Power outages were quite widespread in Northern California. We did not have electricity at our home for four days.

“Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.”
- John Boswell

“From December to March, there are for many of us three gardens:
the garden outdoors,
the garden of pots and bowls in the house,
and the garden of the mind’s eye.”
- Katherine S. White

I made some improvements to two of my webpages: January and February.

December Holiday Activities

Karen and I hosted visitors from Portland, Oregon: Alicia, April, Katelyn, Michael, and Sean. We also had local visitors Debbie, Jordan, Jaylin, Chloe, and others from April’s family from Corning.

Karen and I were not working on our part-time jobs, and we greatly enjoyed 15 days straight of unpaid vacation. Such is the life of us semi-retired Americanos living in Northern California.

We feasted on a wide variety of meats, grains, and vegetables. Many special pastries and candies were made by adults and children. We talked. We watched HD-TV and HD-DVDs. We toasted and drank the fruits of the earth. A few went outside to smoke. A few walked outdoors or sat by the fireplace in the “Serenity Circle.”

We enjoyed drives to Willows, Redding, Corning, and around the Tehama County countryside.

We talked about the weather, which was generally very cool 45-60 degrees F. Snow in the Ashland - Siskiyou Pass is a concern of all Interstate 5 drivers during this time of the year. Karen and I have driven through snow from Ashland to Redding - a challenge with some dangers. When I5 is cleared and the weather is clear - the snow on the Cascades-Siskiyous is a sight to behold. Getting past Mt. Shasta is a third of the trip from Red Bluff to Portland.

“One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.”
- Wallace Stevens, Snow Man
