The purpose of this bibliography is to help me keep track of books in my home library (VSCL), my Internet research, and various notes about the subject.  I first began reading books about Buddhism and Zen in 1960, when I was 14 years old.  Back in 1960-1970, I borrowed the books on Buddhism, Eastern religions, Taoism, Zen, mythology, and philosophy from the City of Commerce Public Library, from the Montebello County Public Library, or the East Los Angeles County Public Library.  Back in those days, 1950-1970, the only way for a person in these kinds of lower income neighborhoods to learn about other ways of thinking and living was through reading books borrowed from a local public library.  Surprisingly, later, in 1976, I actually became the Library Manager of the new and larger East Los Angeles County Public Library on 1st Street.

From 1960-2023, I have been a solitary Buddhist/Daoist enthusiast, researcher, reader, practitioner, precepts follower, and sympathizer. I have attended Buddhist and Daoist services, visited Buddhist Temples on the West Coast of the USA, and enjoyed the company of Buddhist/Taoist friends. Through reading and research I have studied Yoga, Tantra, Vedanta, Indian Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Chan/Zen Buddhism, Daoism, Goddess worship, and magical-popular Buddhism.

Note:  On February 13, 2016, I gave many of my books about Buddhism to the Sky Creek Dharma Center in Chico, California.  The Sky Creek director, Bob Speer, came out to my home and picked up six boxes of Buddhist books and one walnut wood shelf.  I hope the books benefit the Sky Creek Dharma Center.  We moved from Red Bluff, California, to Vancouver, Washington, in April of 2017.

The Blue Cliff Record

Blue Cliff Record - Wikipedia In the Song dynasty (960-1279) Zen flourished in China. Zen Master Xuedou Zhongxian (Jap. Setcho) (980-1052) sorted through hundreds of Yulu collections of encounter dialogues, and came up with 100 good examples, or Cases, for Zen training purposes.  His compilation was called The One Hundred Odes.

Odes to a Classic Hundred Standards by Xuedou Zhongxian

The Chinese Zen Master Yuanwu Kegin (Jap. Engo) (1063-1135) revised The One Hundred Odes. He added introductions/prefaces for each Case, added some all the recapitulation verses, added notes and added comments. After his efforts, his written document came to be titled The Blue Cliff Record, Pi Yen Lu, Hekiganroku by later users.

Koans are used in Zen (Chan) Buddhist training to help the student to achieve new levels of insight, realization, awakening, or enlightenment.  "Koan" is the Japanese word, and "Kung an" is the Chinese word for these tools of training.  Koans are a record of the many questions and answers, dialogues, and interactions between Zen masters and students, between Zen students, and between Zen masters.

Alan Watts - Wikipedia

"Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British writer and speaker known for interpreting and popularising BuddhismTaoism, and Hinduism for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. He received a master's degree in theology from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and became an Episcopal priest in 1945. He left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies.[2]  atts gained a following while working as a volunteer programmer at the KPFA radio station in Berkeley. He wrote more than 25 books and articles on religion and philosophy, introducing the emerging hippie counterculture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), he argued that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy. He considered Nature, Man and Woman (1958) to be, "from a literary point of view—the best book I have ever written".[3] He also explored human consciousness and psychedelics in works such as "The New Alchemy" (1958) and The Joyous Cosmology (1962)."
