The Ways of Walking
Strolling, Sauntering,
Meandering, Hiking, Wandering, Walks, Hikes, Climbing, Tramping, Pilgrimage
This is my plan for using my 2003 Ford Explorer to travel in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia in 2019 and 2020. When my wife (Karen) and I (Mike) travel together, we sleep in motels, yurts, cabins, or hotels.
The travel books, guides, websites, reference books, natural history manuals, maps and booklets we use are listed in my Northwest Travel Bibliography.
I write about these short travel adventures in my Cloud Hands Blog. Follow the adventures by the Category Labels: Oregon, Southwestern Washington, Washington, Travel, Camping.
I plan to travel alone on many overnight trips in 2019-2020, and will mostly sleep overnight inside of my 2003 Ford Explorer. I can lie down, rest, and sleep inside the back of the Ford. The resting/sleeping area in the back of the Ford is 74" long, 45" wide, and 36" high. It is snug, but tolerable. In addition, I can sit relatively comfortably inside the front passenger seat of the Ford, and that seat reclines. I also bring along a good folding outdoor camp chair.
Inside the Ford Explorer it IS completely dry, windproof, quieter, with windows for viewing, bug free, warmer, and safer behind locked doors and windows. I set up for sleeping in the Ford before leaving home, i.e., yoga mat, towels, self-inflating pads, sleeping bag, blankets, pillow, etc. I try to bring only essential gear to conserve on space usage inside the back of the Ford. Again, for sleeping, it is snug because of the low interior ceiling height, but tolerable. In cold, wet, and windy northwest weather a cozy dry SUV is greatly appreciated at night or during the day.
In 2019, we currently travel in a 2003 Ford Explorer. I bought it for $3,000 in 2016. It has a 6 cylinder, 4.0 Litre engine, with both 2 and 4 wheel drive, and was updated before I purchased it with a second new engine and transmission. It is currently up to date in repairs, maintenance, new tires, new brakes, upkeep. It is old, has lots of miles on the chassis, but is overall quite reliable, functional, and ready to hit the road. The Ford is kept in good vehicle readiness for travel.
Keep it simple: Pull up into to a nice looking level (flat) campsite. Register and pay ($7 to $15 typically) as needed. Set out my camp chair. Done! No tent setup required, no kitchen/cooking setup. Take a walk. Explore. Read. Listen to music
Opening up the rear lift door provides some shelter underneath. A large plastic tarp over the rear lift door provides even more protection from mist or drizzle and breezes.
If I eat at a campsite, I eat un-refrigerated foods (e.g., dried fruit, nuts, jerky, crackers, cookies, hard cheese, fresh fruit, brandy, etc.). This eliminates the need to carry some boxes with supplies for tent camping like: an ice chest, ice, pots and pans, cooking tools, food, firewood, stove, lantern, kitchen supplies, etc. When my wife and I occasionally tent (10'x10'x6' Coleman Dome) camp at a family event in the summer we bring all the camp comfort supplies and cooking gear and eat sumptuously. For me, when alone, I mostly eat out at restaurants, cafes, pubs and fast food joints while on the road; or, eat from my un-refrigerated stash of food. I store hot water in a good thermos. Again, partly this is because I want to reduce the amount of gear carried inside the van, and also because I am going out to travel for just 1 to 3 nights.
I plan to use 12 volt DC lights, speakers, cell phone, tablet, MP3 player, and other appliances. I use a Portable Power Station, Schumacher model XP2260, 1200 Peak Amps, 400 watt peak. I charge it up fully before I leave, and it supplies all the power I need inside the Ford Explorer without using any energy from the Ford Explorer battery. I also sometimes charge 12 volt appliances while the Ford engine is running on the road, but not when the engine is off. I have a small electric pot for heating water that I can operate from the Schumacher Station. I also have battery operated flashlights, lamp, AM/FM radio, etc.
I have no rack on the top of the Ford.
I do not store any items on top of the Ford. I do not store any items in a
rack attached to the trailer hitch. I do not have a bike rack or bikes.
I try to carry only what is needed inside the Fore SUV for walking adventures, short hikes,
sightseeing, photography, sitting and looking, some creature comforts, safety,
visiting museums and parks, etc.
The Ford will have emergency supplies ready at all times: easy repair equipment and tools, extra clothing, blankets and sleeping bag, simple food supplies, communications gear, paperwork, safety gear, etc.

I use a Kindle edition. VSCL. His inexpensive conversion plan is
based on using a Toyota Sienna minivan in 2017; and, other similar minivans
would suffice. He presents a sensible, practical, and effective
plan. I drive an 2003 Ford Explorer, which would not work for his plan.
However, he gives a number of good suggestions that would also apply to tent
camping out of a Ford Explorer.

Here is my walking path. It is a .35 mile, asphalt paved, cul-de-sac, Kilkenny Lane, in Red Bluff, California. Kilkenny Lane moves in an east-west direction from the front of my home to Highway 99 West. I practice Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung in the circular area in front of my house shown the foreground of this picture. I rarely encounter a car on Kilkenny Lane. I walked this path for fitness and pleasures from 1999 to 2017, then we moved to Vancouver, Washington.
